WHO WE ARE

In 2012, members of the congregation at UniPlace Community Christian Church in Champaign, Illinois started weekly Wednesday free community dinners in order to better serve their local community.

This endeavor quickly blossomed into a college student-run student organization headed by students at the University of Illinois, where over 10,000 meals have been served to those in need.

Today, we are an RSO who not only continues this mission of running the community dinners but also aims to help the underserved in any way we can. We still put on weekly, free community dinners during the semester, but also take part in things like community clean up events, putting together care packages for those in need, and other service events!

WHAT WE DO

We have two goals:

1.) Fight hunger, especially among the homeless, food insecure, and student populations in Champaign-Urbana.

Hunger also takes other forms. You may have a hunger for justice, for peace, and to make an impact for others. We hope to be able to satiate your hunger in this regard as well.

2.) Build community. Food unites us all, and by breaking bread with people we may see as different to us, we hope to break the invisible barriers in this community that serve to divide us.

In order to achieve these goals, we do the following:

  • Volunteer at the Community Dinner every Wednesday

  • Fundraise $8,000 in order to keep our dinners going each year

  • Focus on initiatives to bring more resources to those we serve at the dinners. For example, we began free medical screenings every month through IMSS, and hope to implement health product drives and free dental care initiatives in the near future

  • Advocate for the underserved through spreading awareness of policies

  • Create a tight-knit community of students who are motivated to serve those in need
